A closer look at makeup artist Suzy Gerstein: Q: What is the most interesting point or biggest accomplishment in your career so far? A: Working on the shows at Fashion week is always a rush and fine-tunes your skills as a makeup artist.  I love working as a team and being inspired by the creative people around me.  And I think I am most proud of joining forces with various organizations aimed at empowering women, be it the Avon Foundation for victims of Domestic Abuse, Dress for Success NY, or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.  I would say the most thrilling aspect of my job and what I feel most lucky to be able to do occurs when I can take the time to make a woman see the beauty that I see in her.  When somebody looks in the mirror and her eyes well up I can't even describe how rewarding that is for me. Q: I see you went to Madrid at one point to study. Does this have any influence on your work? A: I lived with a very strong, some might say tough but definitely colorful older woman during my semester abroad in Spain named Capilla.  She was a fabulous cook.  She was hard to get to know at first, but over the months of my stay, she started to grow comfortable with me and would ask me to paint her nails or do her makeup.  That's when I heard the best stories about her memories of a living in Franco-era Spain with a bull fighter husband, and that's when I saw the coolest pictures.  I was amazed at how close we got, and it really helped me appreciate the intimacy of beauty rituals and their power to bring people together. While in Spain I studied Art History and Spanish poetry and repeatedly visited the works of Velasquez in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, and viewed the paintings of Lucien Freud, Francis Bacon and Goya.  I am also hugely influenced by the beautiful Picasso Museum in Barcelona that houses many of his lesser-known his earlier works, and where you can see Picasso's obsession with reinterpreting Velasquez's classically beautiful 1686 Las Meninas -- as only Picasso could.  I am still influenced by the surrealist collaborations between Federico Garcia Lorca, Bunuel and Salvator Dali, and haunted by how the words of the great Spanish poets evoke emotions so powerfully.  I am fascinated by that time period in which artists who shared a common passion and imagination were influenced by each other across media, and the creative possibilities were as big as you could dream them.
