Prep: Start by exfoliating lips (Oquendo likes Bite Beauty Whipped Cherry Lip Scrub) and thoroughly hydrate your complexion. Try Dolce & Gabbana’s Aurealux Cream for the “wet” effect. “With a red lip, keeping everything else light and fresh is key—you want to see freckles and skin coming through,” he noted. For added radiance, tap a highlighter on the high points of the face, but skip the blush.

Base: “Blot lips with a tissue to remove any excess moisture,” Oquendo explained. “Then apply a sheer layer of concealer.” He likes one with a drier texture (such as Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage) to prevent pigment from sliding off and bleeding. Next, fill in your mouth with liner.

Color: For intensity, apply color straight from the tube (try NARS Audacious Lipstick in Carmen). Want even more drama? Slick on blue liner in lieu of black. “It’s less harsh and not as expected,” said Oquendo.
